Episode 2 “older sister” (Japanese: 姉) is the second chapter of the Lucky Star manga. It was originally published in the Comptiq February 2004 issue.
This chapter introduces Hiiragi Kagami. In the chapter, Hiiragi Tsukasa and Izumi Konata are revealed to be dependent on her for homework.
In Volume 1, the episode begins and ends with art of Tsukasa.
TSUKASA HIIRAGI[:] Kagami’s twin sister, the younger twin. A normal girl with normal grades and normal athletic reflexes. A caring person that can be swept away by the atmosphere. She may be pretty tough mentally, she can adapt to all of Konata’s aloof comments. (Yoshimizu Kagami, Lucky Star, vol. 1, English ed., trans. Rika Takahashi, p. 10.)
Strips
- “sisters”
Japanese: 姉妹. Hiiragi Tadao interrupts his daughters regarding if they have done their homework during the vacation. While Tsukasa has wasted the vacation playing, Kagami has nearly finished it.
- “differences in consciousness”
Japanese: 意識の違い. Kagami receives phone calls from Miyuki and Konata about studying together. Kagami is far less enthusiastic about the latter’s call, knowing Konata’s lazy personality.
- “yin and yang”
Japanese: 陰と陽. Konata and Tsukasa ask to copy Kagami’s homework. Kagami allows it, but warns it will negatively impact their academic career. While Tsukasa reconsiders, Konata responds she will manage with an all-nighter before the exam.
- “efforts and results”
Japanese: 努力と結果. Kagami finds Tsukasa sleeping at her desk. While initially impressed at Tsukasa’s attempt at studying, she finds that Tsukasa’s answers are riddled with errors.
- “yin and yang 2”
Japanese: 陰と陽2. Konata, Tsukasa, and Kagami take an exam after the vacation. Tsukasa doesn’t do so well, scoring only 58 percent, while Konata, to Kagami’s shock, scores 86 percent.
In the Anime
Episode 2 of the anime adapts all the strips in this chapter. The first strip is greatly expanded upon with a montage showing Hiiragi Tsukasa and Izumi Konata wasting their golden week vacation while Hiiragi Kagami does her homework. The third strip is also expanded upon with additional interactions, and Takara Miyuki is visibly present. The final strip has a longer sequence showing all the characters focusing on their exam.
