Episode 1 “begin activity” (Japanese: 活動開始) is the first chapter of the Lucky Star manga. It was originally published in the Comptiq January 2004 issue, which began selling in December 2003[Citation needed].
In the first strip, Izumi Konata has her running timed by Hiiragi Tsukasa. In the remaining strips, the two talk about chocolate cornets, eventually joined by Takara Miyuki.
In Volume 1, the episode begins and ends with art of Konata.
KONATA IZUMI[:] A girl that lives at her own pace, with tremendous athletic talent. However, she’s not what you call a girl of sports—she’s a girl that loves anime and games. Her senses are slightly off from normal people. As a compliment, one would say “she has a unique sensibility.” (Yoshimizu Kagami, Lucky Star, vol. 1, English ed., trans. Rika Takahashi, p. 6.)
Strips
- “the girl who dashed off”
Japanese: つっぱしる女. Tsukasa is impressed by Konata’s running and wonders why she isn’t in any team, despite teams trying to recruit her. Konata reveals it would take away precious time from watching anime.
- “choco-cornet”
Japanese: チョココルネ. Konata asks Tsukasa what direction she eats a chocolate cornet from. Tsukasa unhelpfully responds with “the head”.
- “head”
Japanese: 頭. Tsukasa explains she sees a chocolate cornet like a seashell, so she imagines the thinner end to be the head. Konata, on the other hand, sees it more like a caterpillar, with the fat end being the head, an image that makes Tsukasa uncomfortable. Konata admits that a seashell is a nicer visual.
The Japanese term used is 頭 (atama), which can translate as “head”, “tip”, or “beginning”. While “head” is a more accurate translation in the context of the caterpillar, it is an awkward translation with regards to the seashell since the fat end of a seashell is where the inhabiting animal’s head is located. However, due to Tsukasa’s airheaded characterization, the awkward translation ends up fitting.
- “clumsy”
Japanese: 不器用. Miyuki walks past and finds Konata clumsily attempting to avoid spilling the filling of the chocolate cornet. She suggests Konata could tear off parts of the thin end to dip in the filling in the fat end.
- “being picky”
Japanese: こだわる. Konata is impressed by Miyuki’s suggestion, prompting her to ask Miyuki which end of the chocolate cornet is the head, which distresses Tsukasa.
In the Anime
Episode 1 of the anime adapts all the strips in this episode. The strips around eating food are greatly expanded upon in the episode, with the three girls talking about how they eat plenty of other foods.
